The Horse That Built Canada

The pilot project for “The Little Iron Horse Project™” will begin to document and celebrate Canada’s National Horse through contemporary representational artworks in 2026.

This is the first known comprehensive fine-art series to preserve the heritage, cultural storytelling, and living, breathing tradition of the Cheval Canadien.

The Canadian Horse’s numbers are in critical decline today, with the 2026 census at only 8,700 registered animals.
It is also considered a “heritage breed.”

This Project will span several years and will attempt to portray Canadian Horse owners, breeders, and equestrians.
The work will explore the relationship among horses, humans, land, labor, sport, and Canadian identity.

The Breed

Stocky, multiple colors but often dark brown or black with minimal white markings.

Intelligent and charismatic.

More resources will be added to this section as I move forward with interviews, sketches and links to information.
